Gray Tweed Suit with Black Velvet Collar
Sybil Connolly
1955
Notice the subtle differences between the silhouette of this suit and the silhouettes of the two 1990s suits next to it. The shape of this suit is softly rounded to emphasize the feminine form using traditional tailoring techniques. Tailored garments are essentially different from sewn garments. The shape is built up from the inside out with many layers of different materials that are shaped, stitched, and sculpted to create the desired silhouette. Tailored garments made of wool are also steamed, stretched, and compressed to give shape to the fabric itself.
