Dress and Coat Ensemble
1960-63
This deceptively simple dress skims over the body, but still captures the essential feminine shape. The princess seams start at the shoulder, curve over the bust, and then finish in an inset panel. Double ended darts shape the back of the dress to the body. The coat is also shaped with princess seams, but these seams go all the way to the hem and are offset to the side, using a small dart to transfer the fullness to the bust area. The topstitching on the center front seam and the inverted box pleat create interest without interrupting the effective silhouette of the coat.
